(2011-2012) Players Of The Week

March 4 - Gabe Freeman, London Lightning

 

NBL Canada is pleased to announce that Gabe Freeman of the London Lightning has earned Player of the Week honours for the third time this season.  Freeman is the first NBL Canada player to receive this honour three times.

In London's last two games of the season - both wins at the John Labatt Centre - Freeman averaged a double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds. 

February 27 - Tyrone Levett, Halifax Rainmen

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Tyrone Levett of the Halifax Rainmen has been named Player of the Week for the week ending February 26, 2012.  This is Levett’s first time as Player of the Week, joining teammates Joey Haywood and Justin Johnson in earning this honour.

Levett, a 6’6, 215-pound forward, averaged 17 points per game in four Halifax games, three of them victories.  It was his stellar play and consistent scoring that has helped the Rainmen move into second place in the NBL Canada standings.

February 19 - Brandon Robinson, Oshawa Power

With a light schedule in National Basketball League of Canada, as teams gear up for their postseason runs, the league is pleased to announce that Brandon Robinson of the Oshawa Power has been named Player of the Week for the week ending February 19, 2012. 

This is Robinson’s second timeas Player of the Week; joining team mate Morgan Lewis, as well as Gabe Freeman (London) and Ralphy Holmes (Quebec) in this honour.

Robinson was the leading scorer in two of Durham's Team victories this week, including notching 37 points in Oshawa’s 120-119 overtime win against Saint John on Wednesday, February 15 – a win that kept the Power’s postseason hopes alive.

He also led the Power in scoring with 19 points in a 101-100 win over the Moncton Miracles. Robinson is also currently the leading scorer in the league at 19.47 points per game. 

February 12 - Morgan Lewis, Oshawa Power

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Morgan Lewis of the Oshawa Power has been named Player of the Week for the week ending February 12, 2012.  This is Lewis' second time as Player of the Week; joining Gabe Freeman (London) and Ralphy Holmes (Quebec) in this honour.

Lewis, a 6'5" guard from Painesville, Ohio, started the week with a 22-point effort Thursday evening in Oshawa's win against the Moncton Miracles; then, on his birthday Friday night, he scored 39 points in a 131-127 victory over the Halifax Rainmen.

Lewis was drafted first overall by the Power at NBL Canada's inaugural draft in August 2011.

February 6 - Shamari Spears, London Lightning

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Shamari Spears of the London Lightning has been named Player of the Week for the week ending February 5, 2012. 

Spears joins two-time recipients, Gabe Freeman as the second Lightning player to receive this honour.

Spears, a 6'6" forward from Charlotte, North Carolina, averaged 26.5 points per game in two contests this week, and was instrumental in helping the London Lightning earn an NBL playoff berth. 

January 29 -Brandon Robinson, Oshawa Power

 

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Brandon Robinson of the Oshawa Power has been named Player of the Week for the week ending January 29, 2012.  Robinson joins Morgan Lewis as the second Power player to earn this honour.

 

Robinson, a 6’6”,180 –pound shooting guard, averaged 32 points per game in two contests this week, including scoring 30 in Sunday’s overtime win against the Summerside Storm.

January 22 -Darren Duncan, Saint John Mill Rats

 

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Darren Duncan of the Saint John Mill Rats has been named Player of the Week for the week ending January 22, 2012. 

 

Duncan joins Anthony Anderson as the second Mill Rat player to receive this honour.

 

Darren, a 5’11” guard from Merrimack, had a double-double average of 21 points and 12 assists in Saint John’s two wins – a 102-100 home victory over Quebec, and a 78-71 win over their New Brunswick rivals, the Moncton Miracles.  The two wins kept Saint John in the hunt for a postseason berth.

 

January 15 - Morgan Lewis, Oshawa Power

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Morgan Lewis of the Oshawa Power has been named Player of the Week for the week ending January 15, 2012.  This is the first player from the Power to receive Player of the Week honours.

Lewis, a 6'5" guard from Painesville, Ohio, scored a team-record 38 points, along with 10 assists, in Oshawa's January 12, 31-122 overtime win against Summerside.  Lewis' scoring included 5 three-point plays, to keep the Durham Region team in contention for a playoff berth this season.

 

Lewis was drafted first overall by the Power at NBL Canada’s inaugural draft in August 2011.

January 8 - Stephen McDowell, Summerside Storm

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Summerside Storm’s Stephan McDowell has been named Player of the Week for the week ending January 8, 2012. 

McDowell joins Chris Cayole as Storm players who have received this honour this year.

 

McDowell, a 5’11” guard from Tennessee-Chattanooga, averaged 28.5 points per game in two Summerside contests; scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds in the Storm’s 119-104 victory over Moncton, and 29 points in a 106-98 road loss to the London Lightning.

January 1 - Gabe Freeman, London Lightning

Then National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that London Lightning forward Gabe Freeman has been named Player of the Week for the week ending January 1, 2012.  This is the second time that Freeman has earned the honour this season.

Freeman, a 6'7", 215-pound small forward from Costa Mesa (Calif.) Jr. College, averaged a double-double of 21 points and 13.3 rebounds in three games, including two wins, for the first-place Lightning. 

His high scoring game came on January 1, 2012, when he scored 30 points in a 103-83 win over Moncton.  One game earlier, he pulled down 17 rebounds in a 104-93 London win over Saint John.

Freeman was also recognized as NBL Canada’s first ever Player of the Week on November 6. 

December 26 - Ralphy Holmes, Quebec Kebs

 

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Ralphy Holmes of the Quebec Kebs has been named Player of the Week for the week ending December 25, 2011.  This is the second time that Holmes has won the honour this season.

 

Holmes, a 6'4" guard from Cal State-Fullerton, averaged a double-double of 14 points and 11.3 rebounds in three games this week; in Thursday night’s matchup against the Saint John Mill Rats, Holmes became the first player in NBL history to earn a triple double – Holmes scored 17 points, pulled down 16 rebounds and handed out 10 assists.

December 19 - Darrell Wonge, Moncton Miracles

 

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Darrell Wonge of the Moncton Miracles has been named Player of the Week for the week ending December 18, 2011.  Wonge becomes the first player from Moncton to earn this honour.

Although Wonge, a 6'6" forward from Winston-Salem State who became Moncton's first-round draft pick in the 2011 NBL Canada Entry Draft, averaged 20 points in three games this week for Moncton, it was his 30-point output - including going five-for-six from 3-point range - that helped Moncton earn its first victory of the season, a 111-102 win Friday night over the Summerside Storm.

December 12, 2011 - Justin Johnson, Halifax Rainmen

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Justin Johnson of the Halifax Rainmen has been named Player of the Week for the week ending December 11, 2011. 

Johnson, a 6'6" guard from Iowa, averaged 15 points in two Halifax victories this week; the points included a game-winning basket on Thursday, Dec. 8 in Halifax's 97-96 win over Summerside. 

This is the second time a player from Halifax has received this honour; Joey Haywood received the Player of the Week award last month.

December 4, 2011 - Ralphy Holmes, Quebec Kebs

 

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Quebec Kebs guard Ralphy Holmes has been named Player of the Week for the week ending December 4, 2011.  Holmes becomes the first player from the Kebs to earn Player of the Week honours this season.
 
In Quebec's last three games, Holmes, a 6'4" guard from Cal State-Fullerton, was the leading scorer in all three road victories, averaging 23.6 points per game; he also averaged 9 rebounds and 2 steals per contest.

November 28, 2011 - Chris Cayole, Summerside Storm

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Chris Cayole of the Summerside Storm has been named Player of the Week for the week ending November 27, 2011.  This is Summerside's first player to earn Player of the Week honours, and Cayole becomes the second Canadian to earn the award, joining Halifax's Joey Heywood in that category.

In the November 25, 2011 road game against the Oshawa Power, Cayole had 26 points, including hitting six of eight three-pointers, setting a new Summerside team record in that category.

November 20, 2011 - Anthony Anderson, Saint John Mill Rats

The National Baskeball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Anthony Anderson of the Saint John Mill Rats has been named Player of the Week for the Week ending November 20, 2011.  Anderson becomes the first Mill Rat player to be so honoured this year.

In four games this week, Anderson has led his team in scoring three out of the four games - all three becoming victories for Saint John.  On November 14, in a 91-88 victory over Oshawa, the 5'11" 185-pound guard from the University of Massachusetts scored 27 points; he added a league-high 35 points in a November 17 106-90 win over Summerside.  He followed that up on Sunday night with 19 points and 8 assists in Saint John's 97-92 Sunday afternoon triumph over Moncton.

November 13, 2011 - Joey Haywood, Halifax Rainmen

 

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Joey Haywood of the Halifax Rainmen has been named Player of the Week for the week ending November 13, 2011. Haywood, of Vancouver, B.C., is the first Canadian-born player to earn Player of the Week honours.
 
Haywood, a 6'1" 170-pound guard from St. Mary's (N.S.), was instrumental in Halifax's two wins this week. On Thursday, November 10, in Halifax's 121-95 win over Moncton, Haywood scored 21 points in 27 minutes of play. He would later add 17 points for Halifax in the Rainmen's 100-93 victory over the previously undefeated Summerside Storm.

November 6, 2011 - Gabe Freeman, London Lightning

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Gabe Freeman of the London Lightning has been named Player of the Week for the week ending November 6, 2011.  

Freeman, a 6'7", 215-pound small forward from Costa Mesa (Calif.) Jr. College, was instrumental in London's first three wins of the season.  Freeman started off with a 20-point, 11-rebound night in London's opening game on November 4 against Halifax, a 21-point, 15-rebound double-double on Saturday, November 6 on a road game against Halifax, and then in November 7's win over Saint John, Freeman scored 11 points and eight team-high rebounds.
